MET Office Deja Vu

January 9, 2010

“Mild weather is expected to see out what remains of winter. Despite this, it is expected to be the coldest UK winter since 1995/96, according to provisional Met Office figures.

The low temperatures have also been accompanied at times by heavy snow. During early February, the heaviest snowfall for 18 years was experienced over many areas of the UK.”

“The cold weather has been in contrast to the run of very mild winter temperatures that have been recorded over recent years.

Natural variability of climate means that the UK will continue to see spells of colder weather at times. Although, if it had not been for the general warming already observed in global temperatures, this winter may well have been even colder.

Peter Stott, Climate Scientist at the Met Office, said: “Despite the cold winter this year, the trend to milder and wetter winters is expected to continue, with snow and frost becoming less of a feature in the future.

“The famously cold winter of 1962/63 is now expected to occur about once every 1,000 years or more, compared with approximately every 100 to 200 years before 1850.”

1. This was a press release from last year. Sounding horribly familiar though isn’t, despite the long range MET forecast saying it would be mild.

2. They make the astonishing claim that we would have been worse off without global warming. So global warming is a good thing as well then, because more people die in the cold than in heat or flooding?

3.  They say that a 1963-style winter is now a 1000 year event.  Do we think 2010 will bring another 1000 year event as well?

Also consider this statement:

“The famously cold winter of 1962/63 is now expected to occur about once every 1,000 years or more, compared with approximately every 100 to 200 years before 1850.”

Before 1850?  Before temperature records began? Why mention that, rather than the modern record?

So How do they know those winters were once every 100-200 years?  What about AFTER 1850, which is the record used whenever they want to bleat about climate change?

The four coldest have been:

1940

1947

1963

1979

2009

Now, to me that is more of a 20 year trend in modern times?  So why do we think they did not mention that instead?

I’ve just come off 24 hours on Black’s latest blog. I need a break. But at least he is allowing some of the anti comments through recently.

    Keep your work going, please.
